"The following item is not supported for tagging"

This is more for my information than investigation.
I tagged a .txt and a .doc file using "file..properties...summary". I moved the folder they were in from the Desktop to My Documents and then attempted to quick-tag them using tag2find. (Overkill, I know, but I want to find these files easily again).
When I tried to tag them, I got
"The following item is not supported for tagging"
for both, plus a pdf file in the same folder. I then tried other files in My Documents and got the same response. I checked the properties of the My Documents folder and the "read only" box had a green square in it.
As far as I know this is "default" for XP and read-only is applied only if there is a tick in the box - not a square. Anyway, I "unsquared" the read-only, clicked "apply" then "ok" to close the folder. Checking properties again showed the folder had re-applied the square in the read-only property.
I tried quick-tagging other files in other folders on that drive and was able to do so. After doing this for a while, I went back to the text and doc files I originally wanted to tag and was able to do them now. :?
But what was strange was the doc file had lost the keywords that I had entered using the file summary. Could this be a memory glitch on my machine? So I was wondering, - what error message
would
tag2find show for an "out of memory" error?.

Hi,
very interesting situation. I confess I have no direct answer to your question. If tag2find would run out of memory it would crash with an OutOfMemoryException and not tell "not supported for tagging". I find it very strange that once the tagging was refused by "not supported" and then they were not, because the only check currently being applied is, if the hosting filesystem is NTFS.
I will try to reproduce this situation you described above tomorrow when I'm back in office. The disappearance of the summary file is somewhat strange, but I can assure you that we do not touch any metadata inside any file (and keywords for Microsft Office documents are stored inside the file itself). So I suppose there were some external factors causing this behavior.
What you noticed about "the square in the box" indicates that Explorer believes that at least one file (but not all!) are marked "read-only". This is the default behavior for the file properties dialog: if something applies to some but not all files, the corresponding checkbox will display a square.
Best regards,
Martin

Martin,
Thanks for the reply. I'm sure the bug lies with this pc and not tag2find. I didn't for a second think that you had interfered with the MS keywords, but it was surprising that they had cleared.
I have found that sometimes I have to wait for programs to catch up with my typing, so perhaps some key combination cleared the box just before saving. It's only happened this once to one file, so I'm not worried.
If tag2find could actually read the keywords and apply them as tags though, that would certainly be useful!
Cheers,
Colin.

Hi,
I really like that you are thinking along the same lines as we are
Extracting keywords specified in the file properties and adding them as tags is definitely on our list... Just so many tasks and so few developers... But we are working hard to catch up!
I really enjoy your ongoing great support of our development and I'd like to ask you if you'd be interested in joining our "Premium Tester" group which we will launch once we start with the major rewrite, where members will get advance previews of upcoming releases and maybe some other sort of gimmicks.
Best regards,
Martin

Hi,
My desktop is connected to a corporate workgroup servers. With the menu Tools\Notification, it is proposed to acces to remote directories: good
. But if we want to add files of these remote directories by "drag&drop" the message occurs "The following item is not supported for tagging".
And Passing by the menu File\Add files from\Directories, it displays only the internal drives.
This would be one of points to be solved.
Regards.
