Hi,

I have a question, if the tags themselves are kept as part of the file and "travel" together with the file, or are kept in a local database (so a file copied on another PC will be stripped of the tags) ?

If I tag a buch of pdfs in my windows machine using tag2find and them move the file on a Linux machine (Ubuntu Hardy + Gnome + Tracker), will I be able to search for files taking benefits of the tags or the tags will be sripped / not visible for Tracker / Gnome /Linux ?

Thanks,
Rafal

Hi,

they are stored in a so-called Alternate Data Stream, something not really supported on Linux NTFS drivers at the moment. And as far as I know there are no implementations for either Linux or Windows that could read the tag2find format (a very simple text-only format for tags), but generally, it would be possible to recognize them on Linux, given that the NTFS driver supported Alternate Data Streams and someone would write a program.

Best regards,
Martin

Hi,

thanks for quick answer, which basically confirms what I founf out empirically - a set of files tagged with tag2fins under XP and moved via USB to a Ubuntu PC did not show any tags (under Nautilus + script, under Tracker or under Paperbox).

My problem is that I need to tag around 1'000 files while working on a Windows machine (where I can spend plenty of time) and only them move them on a Linux machine (where I can not spend so much time). Is there any trick that will do it ?

edit: and NTFS driver is not relevant here, as the files will be kept on one of the Linux FS: ReiserFS (or less likely XFS).

thanks,
Rafal
