hello great tag2find crew,

i first just wanna say, thank you, thank you for making this program, it owns its good and that while its still version 0.1 or so....this is soooo good!

there is room for improvement but as far as i can see not much Smiley

i like the way the UI works and how stuff is done, really smart! and inuative
this program just begs to be used, and such should be with every program

in the past ive used tagg for a while, but that didnt really work..
this is the best ever, screw normal desktop search! (only locate32 is good)

good, time for some points to make out...

the UI, although its very good and stuff, its forcefully white and that does not work well with my settings on my windows box, maybe more ppl are using other color shematics

the catagories, they use standart file extensions, but i cant set .mkv or such for movies (also i would like to add/create/edit the names of these catagories), so maybe the extensions for catagories should be editable, too

the tagbox is quietly useless and annoiingly

maybe a rules base tagging system, lemme explain because im not making sence... what i mean is the following, everything that enters a settable directory gets a settable tag, and when it leaves this folder u can set it to leave the tag on the file or remove it

maybe some file name renaming utility, for when files are wrongly named(this maybe something for a later stage or not at all because of the great tools already out there)

maybe make the actiual tagging process, where the program edits the file with the approptiate tag, loose or incorparated in to the program, now ur just waiting to the program applying the tags. this takes the speed out of the workflow of the program, maybe a progress bar on the bottom of the program window or such, maybe even a tag task list, so that everything gets done even when u keep editing and applying the tags

maybe extension script or the like, like the following example....im using tag2find right now to add genres from a website to movies, if i would use a script it would be done in like 5 minutes, it would be a great time saver

i like the UI, it has tabs and information, still i can remove this if i like, i can edit the interface to my liking thats really cool!

when u have the tag cloud open it still gives me the option to open it (the double arrow) (just a minor thing)

also when u edit the width of the tag cloud pane and then fold it in and get it out again it resets it location, i dont know if this is intentionally

i use NTFS drives and ext3 drives in my computer, i can access the ext3 drive like any normal drive because of IFS drives, but there is no support for ext3 in tag2find, maybe something to add in a far far away later state ( i dont have much data on this ext3 disk, but maybe other ppl do)

same goes for reiserFS and such filesystems (i guess it has low to no priority)

further, i think the data in file and in a database is the best solution, it keeps everything in good order.

something i really like is the speed, im used to tagg and sadly, its SOO slow...but tag2find runs great, although i have to process tame it sometimes, it really runs smooth and sweet!

even if support for this program is discontinued ide use it, hell im sweettalking everyone i know into using this program

i hope i was clear on my points, otherwise feel free to ask for screenshots or extra explanation

my english isnt all that bad, but im whacked and therefor cant really type 100% correct engrish

i hope that i motivated u ppl even further, and hope to be of some use

maybe some points are already made, maybe everything i said has been incorperated in the new version, but even that may be so, these are my experiences using version 0.10.1.3

good luck ppl and keep up the good work!!!

ps thanks to this program and great others i have to spend less and less time doing stuff the cumbersome windows way

Hi,

thank you very much for your very long and encouraging posting. Sorry it took me so long to reply to your posting.

First of all, I agree with you, we are now at the beginning of development, not anywhere near where we want tag2find to bring. We are at the moment primarily concentrating on improving the user interface, that's what our "Next Generation (http://blog.tag2find.com/2007/06/25/tag2find-next-generation-tagging/)" is all about.

We will then go on and re-implement the file tracking algorithms, that's what causing most of our bad performance at the moment. We are also fighting with the technical limitations of other filesystems (in comparision to NTFS) in order to get tag2find working on external devices. Our priority here lies in FAT32, as it is most widely spread. Being a Linux (and there ext3 and reiserfs) user myself I'd really love to bring support for those filesystems to tag2find, but I confess, given the market share for Windows users using those filesystems, it's rather unlikely at the moment that this will happen anytime soon.

Please be patient for now regarding the performance of tag2find. We will work on it, promised!

Regarding your concern about tag2find being discontinued: you could not be farther away from the truth! On the contrary, tag2find is just launching right now! ;-)

Hope to reading from you again!

Best regards,
Martin

hi again,

ive got some new views upon tag2find after using it and discussing it with friends. We thought of another feature that might be helpfull; exclude tags.

for when u want to display all your notes exept those about cooking.
or for when u want to display all of your movies, exept those with a certain tag.

someone suggested filename to tags, maybe its better to make this cross, so filename to tag and tag to filename. maybe add in functions to do the same with the directory structure.

maybe add startup settings for tags, so when u start up the tag browser u already have a pre defined set of tags selected or deselected (included, excluded).

the current version of tag2finds browser lists everything in alphabetic order, it would be better if it could be reordered ascending and descending, or by order of number of tags (most or least, ascending, descending)

if there are questions or remarks, i want to hear them, i want to discuss

i can provide more explanation if needed (not really sober right now)

Hi,

thank you very much for your feedback once again. You are right, exclude tags is something important which we are going to be working on soon. At the moment we are still busy working on the new user interface which we expect to be able to present soon.

Best regards,
Martin
