Hi,

you have two options: remove all tags from all files, which will then behave like a new system.

Otherwise you could simply delete the central tag database. It is stored in the location you specified in the Configuration Wizard. By default this is at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\tag2find.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Martin

PS: Nice to read from you again!

Thanks Marin

since the tags are stored in alternate data streams how does deleting the database delete the tags?

Hi,

you are right, the tag itself will not be removed from the file in this case yet, still tag2find won't find it when you delete the database, as it searches in its internal database only at the moment. You can restore the tags from the file later if you want.

We will provide a cleaner in the future, to really scrub your files from the tags if you want.

Best regards,
Martin

doesn't this defeat the whole purpose of storing the tags in alternate data streams?  I mean if it doesn't look at the file itself, hows is tag2find any different then other tagging software, like tagg?

I was quite excited that I could tag a file and then since the tag is in ads I could move that file and the tag would remain.  I hope this is a temporary thing (ie tag2find only looking at the database).

The database is continiously kept up-to-date on file movement, that's why they are stored in the ADS, so the file can be identified and the central database can be updated. Tags are automatically added to the central database once a new file is found that has tags attached.

Look at the central database not as a place of storage for the tags but as a fast search index which is kept up to date in realtime when moving files. The ADS is authorative, not the database. Searching on the filesystem directly would be slow though, that's why there is the index (i.e. central database).

Best regards,
Martin

will tag2find have the ability to search the filesystem for files with ads tags in place?

Sorry, I don't fully understand your question. What exactly do you mean?

Best regards,
Martin

When I add files from a folder it asks if I want to include files that have already been tagged. I am somewhat confused if tag2find is pulling the tag information from the file or the database in this instance.

If it is pulling that data from the database, will there be a function in later tag2find versions for it to search the hard drive for all files with ads tags?

The new file notification poping up in this instance is due to some race condition we are currently hunting down. Tagged files (as long as they have been tagged  on the local machine, that's the limitation for now), will be tracked and the tags preserved when being copied or moved.

Best regards,
Martin
