Author Topic: tag2find on shared network disks  (Read 4414 times)

Hi, tag2find seems a great idea.

However, in a request related to this forum topic removable storage and
ceedo support (http://forum.tag2find.com/ftopic116.html), it seem that more and more people store their important files in a centralized shared disk, that can thus be safely backuped and accessed from many PCs and devices (mp3 / divx players, digital VCRs, ...). It can be windows or linux servers, or more and more the "micro-NASes" like Synology (http://www.synology.com/enu/index.php), the slug (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSLU2), or the kurobox (http://www.kurobox.com/revolution/what.html)

Thus, it would be quite interesting I think for tag2find to be able to work with storage that is
  * networked
  * shared by many instances of tag2find on different PCs
  * not in NTFS (a lot are linux filesystems)

Also, a web API to a  tag2find process could be a killer to remote-use your home tags from work, or from linux/Mac desktops or your mobile phone

Hi Colas,

thank you for your suggestion. We are currently working in this direction, especially mobile disks and towards FAT32 support. The main problem here are technical limitations which make efficient tracking of files very problematic.

We could easily add support for FAT32 / network shares in a way that would not track files as they are copied or moved. If users are would like this, we could do it. But it has the main disadvantage of copies of the files no longer being tagged and if you move the file to a different location the file would "disappear" from tag2find. Our current goal is to try to support file tracking at a more sophisticated level. If you (the users, not you personally Wink) tell me you would like to get a "light" version first, we could see how we can fit this into our development plan.

Best regards,
Martin

I just came across this program last night and was very excited to try it this morning. Unfortunately, it is pretty much useless to me without network support. I run 7 computers at my house plus a Windows Home Server and a Freenas machine and I keep EVERYTHING centralized and mapped to the home server. Your program looks really really sweet; I have a ton of usage ideas for it, but I'm so disappointed it doesn't yet work over a network, which is where I think this program could really shine and become amazingly useful.

What is the timeline on offering network support?

Thanks.

Thank you for your post. I am also a fan of the network solution but it is tough at the moment because of our day-jobs. We will have a meeting on Monday about the next steps. After that we should know more about the time schedule.

Best regards,
marc

I haven't tried this yet, but wouldn't it be possible to use tag-2-find on mapped network drives?  I will try tonight and post back my results.

It surely is a nice idea to tag everything, but it must be done properly, when tagging a file the tag must stay with the file not in some obscure database forcing you to use a special application in order to see your tag.
Tag2find gets a four star for the idea, but only one star for the implementation. That’s my opinion at least.
