Tag synonyms, tag hierarchies

Hi all.
I like tag2find very much. I hope it will help me organize my collection of scientific papers. I know that my following request is not easy to fullfil but anyway...
It would be very nice If tag2find could use also synonyms of a tag searched for or if it could suggest a tag that is synonymum of the tag just entered and used previously...
e.g. if I would like see all items tagged by "optimization" and "algorithm", it could search also for tags "minimization", "maximization" (as synonyms for "optimization") and "function", "program", "tool", "utility" (as synonyms for "algorithm"). It would be also nice to be able to share the synonym structure with other users...
There are some online sources of such groupings, see e.g. http://labs.google.com/sets. Maybe they provide some API, I dont know.
Taken one step further, the tags can be organized in hierarchies or taxonomies, not only in groups. Thus searching for "color" could provide results on "red", "green", "blue", or a search for "display" could porvide resolts on "LCD", "TFT", "plasma",....
Thanks a lot!

Hi,
we did some basic research in this area and yet did not have very good results when using it, as it produces a lot of "false positives". In a limited sub-set as you suggest above, and maybe even driven by user input, it would however really add a lot of new power to tag2find. Thanks for the link, we will have a close look at it and see what we can do to realize your suggestion.
I for sure like this idea, both for technical challange and for the potential power if we can create a usable and intuitive way of integrating this while still delivering good results.
Hope to hear more suggestions from you!
Best regards,
Martin

It is really something like the "Folder view" pattern of Tags. And it will satisfy the theory of psychology. That is, once you tags a file with "2.1.1" (for example), then this file will be automatically tagged with the upper tags in the
hierarchies, such as "2.1" and "2" . This is the ecnomical philosophy.
see my post "Multiple "view pattern" of tags"

One way to think about this idea is "tag tags" -- that is to say, allow users to tag their own tags, associating a whole set of tags with one tag that is actually applied to the file. i.e. when tagging my recipes, I usually use the ingredients and then a group of cooking terms trying to second-guess how I will search for them later. recipe, recipes, cooking, etc. I have no way to guarantee that I will remember be consistent with every file; some might be tagged only as cooking and some might only be tagged with recipes. If could just apply the tag recipe and have the results for recipe come up when I search for cooking or recipes, that would be super awesome.

Yeah, I see what you mean. We are already discussion "tagging tags" internally, as we also believe this would be a powerful feature.
Thanks!
Best regards,
Martin
